Night
Kindly click the image for the bigger size. When I was little I always look forward in playing with other children in the neighborhood. We would play outside the house because during that time, there were only very few houses and there was a big fields in front of our house. Flying kites was a favorite and another game called catch me if you can! It was so nice to play until nightime but my mother have given us a curfew time to play and we should be inside before six o’clock especially if we were playing with some boys. She’s a bit strict because we are 3 girls…… They would only allow us to play after dinner if we were with my eldest sister and cousins, and if the moon is radiantly showing itself fully. We would go out of the house and come together to talk, laugh and eat some peanuts or hot balut(a fertilised egg with a partially developed duckling, which is eaten boiled) or pandesal (a soft bun) or even mangoes. It became a kind of girl bonding. We also played games in the street like piko(the game in the illustration-and I cannot remember now how it’s called in english) hide and seek, or went cycling around the neighborhood. These memories keeps coming back because I am far away from therm and it makes me smile everytime I thought about it. Come think about it, life was so simple then.

Beautiful illustration, Isay! So nice to read your memories!
Innocence is a treasure worth keeping, Isay. Before the monsters and the mistakes begin to erode your inner child you should make a little room inside yourself and hide the magical part of yourself in there.
(P.S. make sure that the room has plenty of cool toys!)
And that starry sky is gorgeous !
:-)
thanks bea.
steve-you've got me to think about my favorite cool toys..... i love starry starry night....
Isay, you have totally captured a wonderful memory with you sketch and remembrances.
Beautiful illustrations. Sounds like you had a close to idyllic childhood and your memories reminded me of mine :-) Excellent post.
I really enjoyed your submission this week Isay! Have never heard of nor tasted 'hot balut'! The game is called Hopscotch where I come from. My own children love jumping on a trampoline at night, only ban tree climbing because it is difficult to see the small twigs which might catch an eye :) Thanks!!!
thanks teri and autumn-isn't what a childhood memory should be-i guess i am lucky to remember lots of those nice memories.
anonymous-i am glad you like my illo. most foreigners would not dare eating balut. but i would not be surprised if you will try it and who knows you might like it, too.i can eat around four balut in one sitting. Oh ja-thanks for translation. Jumping on a trampoline-gosh that is really cool!
Tomorrow I am going to a Snapper, Spice and Rice Festival of South-East Asian Seafare food! I want to try pickled fish heads!
ohh this is a nice entry isay! i remember when i was a kid, we used to play "patintero" after buying balut. and we (the kids from our street), almost occupied half of the street. we once claimed it was the longest patintero in the world, we should be awarded at Guinness. lol. your illo brought back nice memories.. 8)
wow! i hope you can also try the chinese chicken feet-so delicious. have a nice time.
thanks for the word patintero velvet! i forgot the translation, too. i hope you're having a nice weather over there.
Wow, I love this week's illo. The night is really beautiful in your pic. It reminds me of the beautiful summer nights in tropical (subtropical) zones. I can picture the cicadas' lovely singing and the bright stars. This is a very poetic illo...
Hot balut was one of the food challenges on an episode of last season's Survivor. *G*
This is a lovely illustration isay. I love how you've captured the moonlight as it spills down on the children playing. Thanks for sharing your wonderful memories with us!
I remember that game, thanks for sharing !
the game looks similar to hopscotch or 'peever' as we call it in Scotland
In France it is 'marelle'
Apparently it was played in ancient Rome and versions of the game are found all over the world
This is very lovely both for the execution and the sweet memories it transfers.
miragee-the cicadas-what a romantic scene.
i wonder if any of the survivor challenger get to like the taste of balut!
thanks rowantree!
i agree with you alison-i think it is being played all over the world-would you know where it all started?
many thanks paula!
I love the contrast with the dark background, but i especially love the colors and the feeling of play! This really brings back memories of playing on the street outside on summer evenings..all the neighborhood kids would play tag or jump rope...and we never wanted to come in when we were called! These are delightful, Isay!
What a fun night.
love
Feeling better??
carla- i also love the dark background, too and was satisfied how it turned out carla.
unknown-indeed what a fun night it was.
autumn-i am still sick-i feel like getting old *LOL*
You have captured a really magical side of night here. I love the way it glows.
And also the childhood memories - my mother let us play hopscotch indoors sometimes...
Nice illo!! Happy childhood memories .... so precious!
Long evenings playing with other kids seemed to go on forever - it's funny how time gets shorter as you get older.
The moonlight reaching out towards all the girls in this picture creates a magical focus, sort of drawing them all together. The way all the girls are looking inwards also builds the sense of a small private world. '
Overall, this picture communicates great joy and it's great to see girls playing freely like this, without the constant threat of danger that seems socialised into everything these days.
Lovely illo! It reminds me of good old childhood days and my home country. Yes, life was so simple then. And it still is, isn't it?
